MotoGP championship leader Marc Marquez dominated the opening premier-class session at the 2025 Aragon Grand Prix.
Key moments
- Marquez in league of his own
- Uneven session for other Ducatis
- Five manufacturers in top seven
Marquez's affinity for the Motorland Aragon circuit is well-documented, as is his ability to perform straight off the bat in weekends when the track still isn't gripped-up by laid-down rubber.
This Friday session marked the sixth time in eight attempts this year that Marquez led the weekend-opening practice, but on this occasion he was particularly dominant - dipping into the 1m46s range before any of his rivals even posted a 1m47s.
He made a couple of late attempts to improve on that 1m46.974s in the final minutes of practice, including a final lap that got away from him in the third sector.
Alex Marquez (Gresini Ducati), Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) and Alex Rins (Yamaha) were the only other riders to go below 1m48s, all doing so at the last moment at the chequered flag - with the younger Marquez just preventing his brother from topping the session by a full second, instead getting the gap down to 0.970s.
Bezzecchi and Rins were both aided by a fresh medium rear tyre in that last-ditch push, as was fifth-placed Maverick Vinales, who had to switch to his second KTM bike after his primary one developed an issue.
Vinales' KTM stablemate Pedro Acosta was just 0.001s further back with a late used-tyre lap, while Joan Mir - also sticking with the same rear tyre through the session - was the lead Honda in seventh.
No other Ducati apart from the Marquez brothers made the top seven, though the only Ducati rider to miss out on the top 10 was Fabio Di Giannantonio down in 16th.
He was one place ahead of Raul Fernandez, who is the sole Trackhouse Aprilia representative this weekend after Ai Ogura withdrew on Thursday evening on doctors' recommendation over his tibia fracture from Silverstone.
